So, like many of us looking for unusual fish, I'd browsed their web site & aquabid...awesome fish... but killer shipping costs. & never could quite do it (& I'm kinda close in N. Cal., so not terribly awful) But my husband & I went on a long road trip to see my cousin in Idaho...& a return trip through Portland, Oregon, with Wet Spot on the agenda.

OMG, it was amazing! I had no idea! But I was limiting my list to fish I can't get here, no matter the price difference (& we have some very good lfs in the area). I zeroed in on rainbow loaches (Traccatichthys pulcher), I've lusted after them for quite a few years...but coolish temps & medium-ish sized fish...well they might just work in my 75g...if I dropped the temp a bit.

The man who helped me with all my gazillion questions was extremely helpful...So I said I wanted at least 6 but would take all if there were more (loach nut at her worst, lol). He thought there might only be 5...eek...in for 6, 5 would be ok-ish...more is better (8? whatever). Hard to count them. Since we were driving he packed them with oxygen in a big styro box & 27 hours later I'm slow acclimating all 6 of them after a huge water change (& algae scrape, eek). Almost as good as shipping...

Well, they've been moved 3+ hours later; so far, so good but lights out so hard to say. Fingers crossed! Crap, I forgot to test both the bags & tank...it's been more than a year since I had new fish...that's my excuse & I'm sticking to it, I'm out of practice...& a bit careless I guess. I hope, as always with new fish, they'll be ok. I did a drop of Prime in the bag before their long acclimation process. Pics later? maybe, if I make my husband try. Wish us luck!! We're excited!

Wishing you luck.

Wow, you really only came home with 6 loaches!? I'm so impressed! :) Good luck with them! There has to be pictures, without pictures it didn't happen. ;) But if we are only gonna get one photo shoot, I'd prefer to see them after they are WELL adjusted, like in a week.

Thanks all for the good wishes! So far, so good despite my carelessness. A bit late but I tested today, oops. Ammonia & nitrite both 0; nitrates not quite 0 but very low. New loaches out & about but kind of hiding too, coloring up & eating tablet food & flakes. They seem much smaller in my 75g compared to their 30g? store tank.

I guess there are 2 species of micronemachiellus (new sp? old Traccatichthys pulcher or taeniatus ), I'm not sure exactly which I have...the whole "subspecies" vs separate species thing eludes me ATM...Pics later...mine are (or were) quite colorful, recovering well. Ooooh! I like to know what I have, but cuteness trumps all!! & they are very cute!!

Yes, Jen, I'm quite conservative in my fish selections, especially when my QT is too small for my new 3-4 inch fish (x 6). Not that that Wet Spot didn't have more temptations, they did!! But I was only willing to risk my 75g with it's stunted angel survivor & lemon tetras (x 3 generations), that's scary enough for me, lol. I'm hoping this is worth the price of admission...I'll let you know!

Well, a few days into my tank & I'm thinking I have at least 4 micronemachiellus taeniatus & 2 possible females (or m. pulcher?) bigger & not as colorful...not an ideal mix either way, but they seem healthy & happy so far...

I'm so excited to have new pretty loaches! Very enthusiastic feeders, I think they may be food stashers, tablet food & Repashy seems to disappear soon after feeding but also eating flake. Next water change I'm going to vacuum under the wood & over fissidens moss. I'll WC & test again tomorrow. so far, so good!

I always have horrible luck with sex ratios, just one more reason I like to get big groups. :) Glad they are doing well though!

Loaches are always little piggys! lol

rudeboy, there were 3 or 4 women working when we were there. Is Katie the blond manager or the green haired cashier? Both were very nice. Are you local to Wet Spot? Geez, that'd be ultra cool!

Jen, loaches are piggy, just 1 more thing to love about them, easy to feed, lol. & I love feed a variety to enthusiastic fish.

I got a fairly good look at 1 of the paler, larger, shier fish & it looks so far to me it's like the others as to the dark dorsal & caudal (something markings mentioned on loaches.com) that are supposed to differentiate the 2 species. All of mine that I got a good look at have a darkish leading dorsal edge. The only pics I saw online of M. pulcher don't look as colorful as mine but google pics are often labelled wrong.

I don't really care but with only 6...it'd be nice if they are all the same species...IME female botiids are often the bigger alpha, not at all sure with nemacheilidae. I hoping the color doesn't change as they age, they are so pretty now! Red dorsal & tail, yellow other fins, with a green iridescent wide lateral line & pinkish tummies. Awesome! Like this http://www.loaches.com/species-index/traccatichthys-taeniatus but with red tail, redder dorsal & more all over yellow fins than shown... :D yeah, I'm still overexcited!!
