This is my first cichlid tank. Please tell me what you think and any improvments that could be made. Thanks for any help.

Okay, you asked. I do like the rocks and the gravel has a nice natural look. But why is the filter tube crooked and in the middle of the tank. Move it into a corner so its hidden. And that other little suction cup thingy, do the same thing. And a black background will make your fish get noticed, not the bright blue you see.
Other than that, way to go and I hope it goes well for you.

Its a good start!

As Philbe said i would reccommend playing around with the rockwork to try and hide the filter and heater. Go to http://www.malawimayhem.com and check out thier gallery. They have tons of pictures of people's malawi tanks that look great.

but its looking good to start!

nice tank. yea id move the tubes to the sides or hide them some how.

I also think a black background will give it a better look..

not bad for a begginer. a good tip for rocks go to a landscapeing company its realy cheap you can find some cool stuff and fill the whole tank. i bought $20 in lava rock broke it up and filled my tank it looked realy cool. i found some type rock that had crystals in it. its realy cool. becarefull what you buy though because some rocks have metals in them.
