I have 3 dwarf frogs and 1 betta in a 10 gallon. The bottom fins of the betta seem to be slightly torn. Could this be from the frogs? Whenever I see them they seem to ignore each other....

I had a betta in my 55gal community tank for a while, his fins never looked good after that. I'm pretty sure it was too much current from the filter. But he was so much more active in the tank than he was in the bowl I didn't want to take him out.

Sounds more like fin rot--a common bacterial infection resulting from poor water quality.

I would most definitly bet it has to do with the tank cycling. Betta are NOT good fish to cycle a tank with as thier fins are so delicate. I would take the betta out until the tank cycles or else you may have to deal with the finrot issue, which is a great pain.

The fins look torn, not diseased...
I don't really have another home to keep him in right now.

Here's what's going on:

I had 2 bettas (got them as presents) and 3 dwarf frogs in a divided 2.5 gallon tank. I believe this one's tail fins got torn from the other fish, so I put him into a very cheesy betta bowl (which he hated). I then got a 10g tank, and first put him in it and then the frogs. He's so much happier, I'd hate to take him out of there. Plus if I bought a new small tank, wouldn't that cause the same sort of problems as far as cycling AND where would I put the frogs?

Are you performing daily water changes or testing the water? Diluting the ammonia levels with water changes will help. The fins are either a) being torn by something in the tank--unlikely to the the frogs, potentially on objects in the tank like plastic plants; b) the fins are deteriorating as a result of high levels of ammonia. Fin erosion will look much like physical damage in the initial stages. Since this is a new tank, and you haven't mentioned any objects that would catch his fins, b seems most likely. The frogs, just like the fish, are negatively impacted by the ammonia and nitrite levels of a cycling tank, so daily water changes will help all the animals.

I am on day #11 of this cycle. I've changed the water (at least 50%) everyday except Saturday and last night. I will definatly change it again tonight. I have two soft real plants in the tank, a big rock sculpture, and a couple silk fake plants. I also have kept the Ammonia at .25 and below and haven't seen any nitrites yet. Is that normal? BettaMax seemed to help his tail fin, but I haven't used it since I put the frogs in there.

Would it be worth me purchasing a temporary small betta bowl or something for him and the frogs for the next few weeks? Or adding Prime to the water changes?
