Mystery- need help

The tang likely does have ich, just in the gills. Without knowing how long the other fish are inthe tank before showing symptoms, I'd guess that the ich is in your setup, the new fish pick it up, the existing fish have low level infections that are not obvious. The new fish, already stressed, get worse cases, and the ongoing harrasment of the tang prevents them fro fighting the infection, so they die.

I'd pull the tang and chromis into quarantine, treat them, let the tank run fishles, raised temp, for aabout 4 weeks. Then add something similarly aggressive, like a dwarf angel to the main tank, let it establish some turf and get comfortable, then consider adding the tang and chromis back to the tank.

ich

Do you keep salt in your tank? .3 % kills the ich dead in just a few days, not just on the fish but whole tank. Of course you plants will suffer if they make it and if you have a snail it's doomed. Although the snail doesn't seem to mind salt as long as it's below .1 %.

As for fish dying fast, thats usually a ph crash if it's not a nasty disease.

the tang has been in the tank since mid july
It has no ich- it had it at the start, but it never came back.
The last fish I bought had ich and it never touched the water that the tang was in. I am convinced it is carried by the lfs

Thanks though
