Can you breed crowntail bettas and veiltails together? It's just I have a crowntail male and a female veil and was wondering if they'd work.

I know all the work involved so don't ***** me out about it.

Hey,

Yea you can breed any betta to another betta. Fin types don't matter. Just keep in mind though, that Veiltails are a very dominant gene...especially when it's the female that is the veiltail. Your first cross may only get a small percentage of crowntails if any at all really. If it was the CT finnage that you liked, then I would try finding a CT female or even a halfmoon female to cross with.
Using VT's is extremely frowned upon in the "betta breeding business" as once you have those genes in a line they almost impossible to breed out...it can be done, but would take years.

Thanks! I know that they're frowned down upon but I'm not going to take special care of the fry unless they make it past a few weeks. I just thought it would be neat to see if any survived and what they'd look like. I'm off to college in 1 1/2 years but if I wasn't I'd start a betta breeding program. Genetic traits etc really interest me.

if you're going to breed anything, you should breed the best you can afford, in order to get the best possible offspring. how do you define "special care"?

you probably won't be able to distinguish the different fin types in the fry until they are at least a couple months old. what's the point if you're not going to keep them that long?

If you aren't planning on seeing it all the way through, don't breed them in the first place.

Breeding a CT to a VT has no real purpose, as the VT will be dominant and none of the offspring will be suitable for a breeding program (as you could just buy a new breeding pair and be way better off than attempting to imrpove your line)

However, if you really were just interested in breeding to see how it works or if you could do it, and were willing to do the work to see it through, there is nothing wrong with getting two VT's and spawning them. The IBC doesn't look down on people that do that, we just don't show VT's anymore. Most of us are too concerned with our fancy betta lines =P. In fact there is a rather raging debate going on at the moment about how we're at risk of losing some of the old, pure lines because nobody seems itnerested in maintaining them, and everybody is going after the marbles and the bf's etc. but that's another discussion.

VT's are very easy to get to breed, and you can almost always sell the offspring to a LFS (for cheap, granted) once they reach a sexable age.

yeah, I'm just interested in the process you know? I'm allways willing to see something through and I have a spare tank I could use for the spawn/fry. I'm sure I'll find the babies could homes :). I might try to find a female crowntail, but I doubt they sell them at LFS like they do the males. Plus it will be good practice for when I start breeding more relevent breeds in a few years like I plan on doing.

Thanks for your input.

Well I just got a male veiltail. I decided there was no point getting a crowntail for $5 more since no one around here sells crown females. He is a nice cream colour and I look forward to seeing what the fry look like with their red mother.
