i was thinking about setting up a tiny fishtank for my desk. something less than 5 gallons. i was looking at the eclypse system 3. would this work or no? wasnt planning on keeping fish, just maybe some hermits, or some other inverts.

Absolutely! Nanos are great fun - they just require a little more attention than larger tanks. I have a 1g (yep, one gallon) tank on my desk with a shallow sand bed, live rock rubble, a few hermit crabs and some button polyps. I have to top it off daily with a turkey baster full of water, but that's about all I do for it...aside from weekly water changes and water tests.

would the eclypse system be suffice though? like filtration and lighting wise?
i was thinking of maybe keeping some of the small starfish that you see on live rock? is that possible? the ones that get to be about half the size of a dime?

You should be fine with the lighing on the eclipse with some polyps even. As for the filtration pull the media out and just use it for circulation.

k thanx guys. any suggestions on some creatures to add? i was thinking of getting the three gallon, adding maybe 3 or 4 pounds of sand, and about 3 pounds of live rock. preferably one big peice, then some smaller chunks. im guessing this would be too small, even for damsels? but what if i wanted say a coral banded shrimp. would this be too small for him? i would probably have just 1 or 2 blue legs, and maybe 1 turbo. i would like to get a small but not tiny star fish(not sure if mother nature makes those or not) something that i can watch eat.

any suggestions?

I would say a Coral banded shrimp or other cleaner would do fine.

I would leave the filter media in and change it monthly. The sand will not act as a filter in that small of quanity. and the LR will probably not be enough to do much filtration. Keep a close eye on water parameters until you are very used to how the system runs.
