I have a blue gourami, about 4-5 inches. He can be quite nasty and has been bullying fish in my 55 gallon tank. He only bothers other fish in close size to him, not smaller ones like the danios. I recently removed him from the tank, hoping that maybe re-introducing him after adding new fish might lessen his bullying. Will this work? What can be done to stop him from being an a@#hole?

I have 2 mollies, 9 swordtails, 8 zebra danios, 3 harlequin rasboras, 1 neon blue dwarf gourami

Some gouramies are like that. When a male settles his territory, he will chase away similar oponents. This can be reduced by the used of plants or other visual barriers.

When I noted that in my gouramies thay were in a 250 gl tank. Plenty of space, but only one fake plant. Now, all the 6 gou's are in a 50 gl. tank (much smaller, but full of tall plants), so each one will mind his own business.

This dwarf gourami isn't the same as the one you are talking about, right?

I had a couple of blue gouramis and a gold one. They killed two of my female Boesemani rainbows. I don't have gouramis anymore at all. IME they are territorial and brutish.

I keep a dwarf gourami in a similar setup and have never noticed any aggression from him. He's probably the sweetest fish in one of my tanks. Even the most peaceful fish I have seen dart at something at one point or another, but never my dwarf gourami. I guess I got lucky with him. That stinks cuz I was just thinking about getting a school of them together with angels...now I don't know, sounds risky.

I don't think he's talking about the dwarf being aggressive. He said the gourami is 4-5" and if it is, it's not a dwarf gourami.

I do have a dwarf gourami, but he is fine. It is the blue gourami I am having problems with.

I have two opaline gouramis. They are large and blue, probably the same or similar variety as yours. They are passive/aggressive with each other, I think it is a male and a female. They are also the biggest cowards in the tank, stay hidden in the plants 95% of the time, and even though they are both the biggest fish in the tank (5 - 6 inches each) I rarely see them. I am wondering if you would get another one if they would concentrate on each other and leave your other fish alone?
Take care,
Mary.
