It's been a while since I've had a freshwater tank. I currently have a 15G saltwater tank that uses a deep sand bed and live rock for filtration. I have no mechanical filtration, just water flow, good lighting, a refugium and weekly water changes. This has worked great for me for a year and a half.

Are there any setup for fresh water tanks that are similar? I'd like to set up a 10G freshwater tank with mostly plants and a few fish. I'd like to avoid using filters if possible. I'll probably be doing 1-2 G water changes weekly. I plan on having a nice natural gravel bed, good lighting and proper circulation. Can anyone direct me to websites where i might be able to find out more about this? Or if it's not possible, why? Thanks.

First, I can't answer your question completly, but I can tell you that live rock doesn't "work" in freshwater. I'm not sure why, (or even what it does do when it "works") but it doesn't do it.

With a 10 Gallon though...if you just have a powerhead for water circulation and change the water often enough, you probably wouldn't need a filter dpending on what fish you have.
