I've been enjoying my gobies and loaches so much that I decided I wanted to get some fish with a bit more personality to put in my community tank, which has some vacant space and bioload. I was wandering through the LFS and came across a pair of these little fish, but the female was guarding eggs already, so I didn't want to purchase them and disturb her activity. The owner convinced me to get them anyway since the fry weren't going to make it in that tank anyway, plus he figured someone would buy them out from under me before she was done. So I had them bagged up and browsed for a bit while my wife looked at the bettas (she got a pretty little female). It had been probably 5 minutes when the owner suggested I go bag up the piece of wood with the Acara's eggs just to see if she'd continue tending them in a new tank. Half the eggs were already eaten by other residents of her tank by the time I got it out, but I bagged it up and headed home. While she was acclimating, she lost her dark coloration entirely, but I put the wood on in there anyway. She hid for about 5 minutes, and then:
Yep, she resumed guarding the eggs. It's amazing to me that she recognized her own eggs in an entirely different setting and, despite being nervous in her new home, is taking care of them. Such a cool little fish!
The male is nice looking, but I don't have a decent pic of him yet.
