I have a goldfish in a 20 and there is a build up of algae beginning. Being coldwater and a smaller tank, I cant get a pleco. Would a snail work?? I don't want a snail that will multiply a million times or one that will grow too big.

A snail would help, but one really wouldnt make any difference. If there is a fair problem Id say you'd need about 8 to make keep it under control for a 20g
