Hey there,

I'm tempted to spend good cash on a new lighting unit for my 75 gallon planted tank but before I do, wanted to see if I might salvage what I have 1st.

So, looking for a recommendation regards new bulbs.

This site: ARTIFICIAL LIGHTING(http://www.geocities.com/CapeCanaveral/4742/lighting.html -sorry bout the formatting) is very informative but also very overwhelming.

1) buying new 'uber' bulbs, does it make sense to instead upgrade to a new headunit?

2) with new 'uber' lighting, will my current plants acclimated low / medium intensity lighting be adversly affected negatively?

So that's a 4x55w unit? I'm not really sure what your problem is. Are the bulbs burned out or is the unit broken? What must you "salvage" of it?

I shy away from Jebo and Odyssea products, but if they work for you, keep 'em(unless of course they burn your house down....but that's only a slight possibility...most likely).

If the bulbs are burned out, www.hellolights.com for replacements.

If the fixture needs replacing, go for a 4x65 Coralife Aqualight(what yours is based on), or check out www.ahsupply.com for a retrofit kit.

I am in love with the Current line of lights myself.....

Thx guys.

The unit is in great shape just that, I haven't changed the bulbs in perhaps 2 yrs - way overdue I suppose.

Then again you sometimes hear folks saying that it's really not necessary to change bulbs all that often but, more times than not, advice is TO change htem at least once a year so I suppose the mob rules.

anything in particular regards the 55 watt bulbs I should use?

Also, I'm getting close to 3 watts per gallon now... enough to grow grass?

watts per gallon?

grass... at this point i really dont care WHAT it is... but for reference, how about Brazilian Micro Sword?

Also, 10000k appears to promote zooxanthellae algae growth - why would i want that?
True, references appear to suggest this algae grows in salt water (coral) but want to make sure.

finally, my bulbs currently @ 55W x 10000k so i suppose I'm there anyway AND algae is a pain - probably due to my mismanagement primarily.
More interesting, the exposed portion of the bulbs are 19 1/2" in length... Does that suggest my unit uses the 21" bulbs (accounting for prongs and bulb socket)?

total watts / total gallon = watts per gallon

220 / 75 is about 3 watts per gallon.

is that enough to grow Brazilian Micro Sword?

Yes, it's enough to grow "grass", or in this case micro sword.

In a FW aquarium, algae growth is typically attributed to an imbalance. It's difficult to pin down, but generally it's attributed to factors such as total watts, total photoperiod, excess/deficit of nutrients, deficit co2....but in the 6500k - 10000k range, it's not a problem.

If you experienced an algae bloom due to lighting, it would more be the amount of light(total watts) rather than the temperature.

And yes, that length bulb is what you would need.

Thanks Jeffrey

Do you have a recommendation where to purchase: Coralife Lunar Aqualight Compact Fluorescent Fixture, 4X65 Watt, 48 inch
