Need help choosing a heater & HOB filter.......

Yes, your filtration can definitely affect your stocking levels, although in a 10g there won't be too much of a difference between reccomended filters. My favorite HOB (Hang on Back filter) is the Aqueon 10, it's easy to set-up (pretty much just plug it in), it can handle up to a 20g tank, and it's filter cartridges come pre-assembled.

It's a great site, although it's not perfect. I ussually use it to get an idea of what will work, and then I run it by the forum to see their thoughts.

I liked the article about filters on "Tankgeek.com" but I was hoping for something more in depth especially on the HOB filters. When you chose a filter for your tank did you know exactly which one you wanted?

If you find an article that gives a breakdown on all or just the majority of HOB's in use today would you please let me know? I value the opinions of the members here because they aren't on a company payroll of a filter or heater manufacturer so when you ask a question about a certain filter or heater you will get an answer, either GOOD or BAD, then the reason(s) why its good or bad.

Another reason I value opinions, especially in my case due to the length of time I've been gone from the hobby, is that things have changed so much that its bewildering at times. It helps when you have people steering you in the right direction!!

Way back when, there wasn't a heck of alot of good filters if I recall. You had the filter that you packed with charcoal & floss and sunk it in the tank, then you had the Metaframe Dynaflo's. I don't recall the specs anymore but they were decent filters and they were very reliable. I had four of them and I never had a problem. There were a couple more brands out there but I don't remember anymore.

Although I haven't bought my filter yet, I will be in about two weeks or so. There's more for me to research first but so far I like the Aquaclear at #1 and the Aqueon at #2.

I did like the Aqueon alot until others on this board almost to a person mentioned Aquaclear. The best part is the Aquaclear retains more good bacteria than the Aqueon.

Really, I love the Aquaclear filters. I run them on all my aquariums including my 150g. As for heaters, I have tried them all and Ebo-jager are the only heaters that have not failed me. You can actually set the temp via the dial and it works. For the filters I only use the foam inserts, I do not use carbon but add another foam insert where the carbon goes, more foam equals more surface area for beneficial bacteria. and if you plan on keeping shrimp or breeding small fish, use foam to cover the intake (more surface area) that way the offspring do not get sucked into the filter.
 
I have decided to get an Aquaclear filter and I'll probably get the 150 instead of the 100 Gph. Will the 150 be ok for a 10g ?

The similar size Aqueon filters are rated at 100 or 125Gph.

Also, should I run an extra filter (sponge type) to help supplement the main HOB filter? If Its a good idea, what is a decent sponge filter to get, and will an air pump be sufficient for it?

Regarding the "air pump" , is there a minimum CFM output pump to buy? I guess they're rated by CFM.
