ok, so I just ordered a 40 high to upgrade from my 25 gal (specs below). I also have a 10 gal w/3 alabino cories, 3/panda cories and a pair of rosy barbs.
Here's my dilemma, I only have one stand that is currently holding my 25 gal and this is the stand my 40 high will be going on (same footprint) HOW am I going to do this? I could but my inhabitants of my 25 in to the 10 while I set up but I'd like to run the new tank for 24 hrs first and a 10 gal with that many fish for even just 24 hrs is no good..... Do I have to run it for 24 hrs if I'm using the same filter media, gravel, decoration etc.? Probably not BUT IF NOT should I put the 40 on the floor, empty 25 in to 40 (water, deco, fish, and all) move the 25 off the stand, put everything back in to the 25 which is now on the floor, put the 40 on the stand and transfer again?! Sounds crazy but I feel like it's the only way.... Maybe I can move the tank with the gravel therefore just transferring fish and water.... so confused. Sorry to ramble, I'm just trying to work it oput in my head and thought of asking you guys to see if there's something I haven't thought of yet. I'd like to stress the fish as little as possible of course so any suggestions would be appreciated! :help: :help: :help:

Deco, gravel, fish and 10-15 gals of the water to the 40.

Drain, move the 25.

Water, deco, fish back to 25.

Move 40.

Fish, deco and water plus refill to 40.

I wouldn't risk moving tank and gravel.

thanks bob, that's what I was thinking.... so about 30 gal. of new water will just be like a major water change right? Should I try to save ANY more of the water like maybe in a bucket?

Yep, just a major water change. The rest of the water from the 25 will probably be pretty cloudy, no matter how good your tank maintenance has been. A little extra work on moving empty tankss, but no need to suffer a severe tank twist that can cause later leaks, a broken tank during a critical move, or a bad back. I've already had two surgeries and can not afford another one that might redesign my tats. :dance2:

That hurts both physically and in the wallet ;)

if you are going to put all your old gravel and filter into the 40 you will only mini cycle the tank. get a couple new buckets or big rubbermaid tubs. put the gravel and the fish in them and as much as the water as you can. keep the filter wet and the gravel. take out the rest of the water. put the 40 gal on the stand. add some water in the tank add the gravel. fill it the tank up add the filters make sure the water temp is the same and put the fish back in.

one thing if you get the new filter for the 40 gal before you get your new tank i would add it to the 25 gal. i have moved a few tanks this way.

so what you're say is DO try to save as much original water as possible?

true true... ok good one! Thanks!
