need major help with ich

my guy is starting to look even worse, i think part of his skin is even peeling off. anyone know whether or not its safe to add aquarium salt in with the paracide green???? if so how much salt should i add?

im thinking of doing a salt bath soon. i was gonna get 1 gallon of water, add a tablespoon of salt and put the fish in it for 5-10 minutes and hopefully he can shake the stuff off, is this a good idea?

Pardner, I wish I could find a good answer for you on the interaction of the meds and salt. If the med is for fresh or saltwater use, I would say it's OK, but that is just an educated guess.

With the condition that fish is in, I'll tell you what I would do...

I would do a 50-75% water change to reduce the concentration of the meds, then I would go with the salt and increased temp. I would keep up daily or twice a day water changes at 50%, replacing the salt I took out, keeping the concentration where I wanted it.

In the end, it's your fish, your decision.

I would do the above figuring I had nothing to lose. Without some treatment, the fish will surely die. Kind of like CPR, doing it wrong is better than not doing anything at all. It's not the best answer in the world, but....

I'm very sorry that I couldn't give you a better answer.

I'm not sure that would do anything. Like Ich, Velvet is killed off during its free-swimming stage, before it finds a host.

Here's a decent article:

Link to Ick article if it is Ick

Just in case it happens to be Ick...

Been dealing with an Ick problem myself. I found this link I believe Plah left on another older post and the info covers about everything you need to know.

http://www.aquariumboard.com/forums/articles/25-ich-fw.html

I believe it also answers your question about switching to salt after starting other meds.

For my problem I increased my salt to 2tsp/Gal and increased my temp to 86 degrees. Today all the Ick finally fell off my Clown Loaches (2 weeks from when I first noticed it) so I'll continue with the salt and temp for another 2 weeks to make sure it dies when they finally come out of their shells.

Good luck to you.

Paul

i went to the store today and saw thatthey had some of the mardel maracide and we bought some, it looks exactly like this:

i have a quick question about it though, it contains Malachite green, and i have heard that this stuff kills beneficial bacteria, is that true? also the store told us we should take out the carbon pad in our filter, i was wondering if i should put it in some tank water and keep it or just replace it? is there a lot of bacteria in there or are they located mostly in another part of the filter? also should i half the dosage, are puffers sensitive to this stuff?

Malachite Green is frequently used in conjunction with Formalin.

in most circumstances will not destroy biological filtration bacteria, although they may ‘knock the filter back’ for a short while. However, it is still advisable to turn off or by-pass the filter system for a few hours if possible and as with any treatment always turn off any UV lamps.

During prolonged treatments, especially when the filter has not been isolated, it is important to test for ammonia and nitrite on a daily basis in case the filter has been affected.

in alkaline water MG is converted to a colourless carbinol form. So in alkaline water it may seem that it has disappeared, but it is still present, but invisible!

Wear gloves and goggles when handling malachite green or formalin. Do not inhale the fumes of formalin and always handle in a well-ventilated area. Both are potentially dangerous. Malachite is a respiratory poison as well as being a suspected carcinogen.

Malachite green penetrates deeply into fish body tissues and may have a use against Proliferative Kidney Disease (PKD) in salmonids.

Malachite green is de-activated by light

Ensure the proper dosage. Follow the directions to the letter on the packaging, but make modifications for your puffer with some meds. (e.g. malachite green, methylene blue, and formalin need to be given in half dosage)

Carbon will filter it out almost as fast as you can put it in. Ditch the carbon. Don't bother trying to save it, that isn't where your beneficial bacteria llive anyway.

Quoted and repeated on purpose :
also should i half the dosage, are puffers sensitive to this stuff
Definitely.

well i added half the dosage of maricide last night after a huge water change and this morning our worst fear came true when i woke up and noticed the puffer dead  poor little guy, and the worst part is i coulda prolly saved him if i started the right kind of treatment earlier  hopefully my other guy pulls through, he is not nearly as bad as the other one was and this one has been eating and swimming around and whatnot.
