You might try Dwarf Gourami. The Neon Blue and Flame variation are quite striking and because they are a dwarf variation they will not outgrow your tank. I believe their maximum length is only about two to three inches. The really pretty dwarf gourami are the male of the species and are all you will find in a normal run of the mill fish store. The better stores will also sell the females, who appear a muted grey, but upon closer inspection do have some interesting color of their own. I personally have both Neon Blue and Flame males and have only Neon Blue females. I keep mine in a two female to one male ratio, so as to curb as much in-fighting between the males as possible. I prefer the Neon Blue female because if you look closely she has the same vertical lines of color the male has, her’s are just substantially more subdued. Another benefit of the dwarf gourami is they, at least in my own experiences, tend to be a fairly peaceful fish just minding themselves and their respective females. My dwarf gourami are kept in a community tank in my parents living room. I knew I had made a good decision when my mother stopped me one day shortly after I had added them and actually asked about the new fish – normally she could care less, she told me so herself. She said, and I quote: “those new fish are really pretty, I didn’t think there could be any pretty freshwater fish. I thought all the pretty and colorful ones were ocean fish.” I then explained to her what they were and she actually listened attentively, rather than tuning me out as she has admitted she normally does when I start talking about fish. So, if you want a better relationship with your parents, significant other, roommates, etc., you should add dwarf gourami to your tank. BTW, I know I speak for the rest of us here when I say, we do expect to see pictures once you make your decision!
