I need a snail that won't auto-repro, but still won't eat my plants or grow too big for my tank. anyone know of one?

olive netrite

they are technically a brackish water snail, but they do live in fw, There is a journal article in the last issue of the NANFA (North American Native Fish Association) A guy in the biology department of Missouri had some live in a 20 gal fresh water for over 6 years. They cannot reproduce in FW (they can in the presence of calcium and green water, or so i have heard) you can buy them here http://www.azgardens.com/aquarium_snails.php

In general it is not a good idea to keep brackish water animals in a fresh water tank, in this specific instance the fresh water seems to only effect the reproductive cycle.

my 2 cents

Pomacea bridgesii, commonly sold as mystery snails. They don't eat live plants, they only reproduce with a male and a female, and clutches are easy to see and destroy if you wish. Be aware that some snails labeled as mysteries are canas which eat plants. The difference is easy to spot of you look at the pointed part of the shell. Bridgesii have a very pointy spire. Canas have a more smushed spire, like a cinnamon bun.

apple snails do not harm plants, but i think they are asexual (maybe not, i forgot)

whatever their sex is, they do not reproduce very fast and definately not at the speeds like ramshorn, mts, etc

apple snails r not asexual. http://www.applesnail.net/

U need one of each sex to breed them, so if u get just one u should be good to go. My LFS tried to sell me them to make alot of babies and they didnt make any. Then I found the above site and found out why they werent making any, cause u need both sexes. Silly LFS.

Hope the link helps.

my unfortunate experience has been that both apple and mystery snails like to eat plants, so they won't work. also, I have heard of both apple and mystery snails grow to the size of baseballs, which is definetly too big for a 10g.

True 'mystery' snails, Pomacea bridgesii, do not consume live plants, although most other Pomacea ssp do. A bit of clarification, too...all Pomacea ssp and Marisa ssp are considered 'apple snails', not just the big ones, Pomacea maculata.

well, unfortunately for me, the mysterys at my LFS are the big plant eating kind, so i'm out of luck there. know anywhere where they actually list the species of snail that they're selling so I can get one that won't eat my plants?
