Hi everybody, this is my first post. This is my first aquarium also. I was given a tank 36x18x25,fresh water gravel rock almost a 5 gallon bucket full,Eheim 2217 filter,Rena Air 400,under gravel filter,40 watt light,EBO Jager/Warnock Hersey heater and plastic plants, wood stumps, and big rocks ect.. Is this equipment(brand names) any good? I thought I had a simple plan, change everything in the canister filter, clean everything else up, put it back like it was, get the water right and buy fish. I went to a big fish store in Houston and the guy says...throw "everything" away except for Eheim filter canister, even the filter hoses were trash. For one reason or another he found fault with almost everything. He wanted $350 to get this tank up and running. What would you guys do? And where do you buy your supplies at?

if I were you, I'd rinse everything.....

then remove the UGF and the air pump (I usually don't use them)
lay down the gravel, to cover the floor of the aquarium (although that 5 gallon fail is probably not enough to make 1" for your 65 gallon tank)

and run the heater and the cannister...

and let it run a while (throw in 1 or 2 fish for cycling)...

the plastic plants, wood stump, rocks, etc are up to you cause it's decoration..

the 40watt light is what? sounds like 2x20W (48") flourescent

that'll suffice for some low light plants.......

your initial plan is good enough, no need to throw everything away... they just want to make money....

IMO I don't think you need to spend much (if any) money to get it running....
although I'd buy 1 or 2 bag of Fluorite or something to mix with the gravel to allow for better plant growth (although lights may need to be upgraded later on)
