hey there everyone i have some questions.i'm new to fishkeeping and i have a 10 gallon tank..i believe it is still cycling and i have 4 danios in it with a pleco..the tank has been cycling for about 2 weeks now and the ammonia is at .25....now my 2 zebra danios are looking pale and swimming at the bottom of the tank..they swim frantically sometimes and this isnt the same behaviour as when i first put them in..does anyone have any suggestions?

How often are you changing the water, how are you treatnig the water if and when you change it and do you have any other test kits, most notably, do you have them for nitrites and nitrates?

need help

k well yes i am doing water changes every 2 days..about 30 percent..and i do not have any nitrate or nitrite kits..i noticed that the zebra danios are getting a little colour back..but still acting wierd

I would buy the other test kits ASAP. The cycle isn't about ammonia only and to know the other two values will also help you determine when your tank is cycled. For more information on cycling, check out the thread titled "Sticky: Cycle" in the Freshwater Newbie forum. How are you treating the water before you do changes? Do you know if your municipal water supply uses chlorine or chloramines in their treatment of the water to make it safe for human consumption?

ok i will have to get some other test kits..i am treating my water with aquaplus..it removes chlorine and chloramines..i treat it before i put it in the tank..i kinda messed up and put too many fish in before it was ready..but i have 4 danios and a pleco in there now..i have 2 zebra danios and 2 albino danios..

Okay, I'm not very familiar with Aquaplus, so please be aware that some Cechlorinators claim to neutralize or remove chloramines when all they do in actuality is break the chlorine/ammonia bond (chloramine is just chlorine and ammonia after all) actually leaving toxic ammonia in the tank.

I'd keep up with water changes and keep testing that water. That's the best possible way to ensure as healthy a fish as possible during fishy cycles.

ok will do..thanks..aqua plus says it removes chloramine and chlorine..so .....i hope my danios make it..i'll keep u posted.thanks

Not to butt in but you need to find a new home for your pleco. If it is a common one they can get to be two feet long(24inches)! I recommend returning him to the store and once your tank is FULLY cycled add some ottos(they are very sensitive) Have a nice fishy day! :-)

I would also suggest some PRIME water conditioner, it will neutralize the chlorines in the water as well as neatralize ammonia. I was amazed at how much ammonia there is in my tap water.

WOW.......well i went out and bought all kinds of liquid tests for everything and the only thing out of normal is ammonia....it's a little high...but not leathal.....so i'm just doing water changes to keep it down..my danios are looking much better.......but i'm still worrying.....just cause i'm new to this and dont know what's gonna happen...but all is ok ..thank u very much for u'r help..but please feel free to give me advice...i can always use it..thanks
