Need Stocking Ideas

I have a 38 Gallon cube that has been running for some time and unfortunately had a massive die-off from my own ignorance and stupidity from adding a new piece of driftwood about two months ago. Now I'm in the slow process of rescaping with live plants and need some ideas for some new watery companions. I would like to have a German Blue Ram, or a pair in there when the weather gets warmer and can have them safely shipped and the tank has settled itself out (i'm battling a Green Algae bloom for some reason, Lights have been off for a few days, might be due to the lack of CO2, tank being understocked, or too much light). I want something active and colorful but won't distract from the GBR if/when I purchase one. Currently I have 2 Albino BN Plecos, 5 Cardinal Tetras, and 1 Sunset Dwarf Guorami (rescued from a friend, who which gave me its entire 20 gallon setup for free).

Any and all input is appreciated!!
Thanks

Joe

More cardinals, some cories, and a couple of female dwarf gouramis. :)

What about the driftwood do you think caused the die-off? I have been scouting the creek and river near my house for some specimens, that is why I ask.

I purchased the driftwood from a vendor on eBay and I dont know how I managed to but I forgot to boil the driftwood before using it to get out the bleach he used to clean it. the $40 of Anubias plants I attached to it and planted near it all rotted, lost 2 SAE's, a school of Bleeding Heart Tertras, and 3 Upside Down Catfish, luckily I had some decolorinator still in my cabinet and was able to save my 2 BN plecos (I have well water and dont need to worry about chlorine in my water). It was really a dumb move on my part and a hard lesson to learn!

I've always wanted to have a small group of Sparkling gouramis and was never able to find a LFS the would carry or order them for me, so I went ahead and set up a 10G tank without them. I went into a new LPS that has recently opened up near Rutgers and take a look at their stock and there they are 10-15 Sparkling Gouramis for 1.69 each! I would love to get some but I think they would get lost in my 38G tank. They also have Panda Cories for 4.99 that I will be picking up 3-4 on Thursday with some more Cardinal Tetras.

Am I right in assuming the the Sparkling Guoramis would be "lost" in my tank. I dont want them picked on by any other tank mates now or in the future. I would to get some opinions before buying anything (as hard as it was not to impulse buy).
