alright, im getting mixed signals....

LFS says fresh, even a few sites on line say so.

but i also read Brackish too.

Brackish experts, please tell me the correct water?

I think it's either/or, not positive on that. I beleive they get pretty big, hope you've got a HUGE tank...

it would be a 200 gal if i set it up for them (3)

needlenose gars get 4-5 feet long. not doable in a 200 G.

oh, sorry.. that's longnose gar! oops... yes, you're right. don't worry...

Needle nose gars aren't really true gars so they don't get very big. They would easily fit in a 200 however I do not know about the salt content needed for them.

BTW.. I hear their mouths are very brittle and will break if they scare and hit the side of the aquarium.

My needlefish lived for almost 2 months until my blue crab ate him. :( They can stand brackish and mine was in 1.012 SG. I drip acclimate all my fish just in case you want to know how they get added.

Xenentodon can live in brackish water, but they most likely are mostly freshwater/ slightly brackish at best. Weaning them off live foods is also a struggle with them, but it probably can be done with frozen silversides or some other meaty food over time.

Mine ate his first piece of freeze dried krill a few days before he got eaten.
