I am having problems with my neons again...I have 12 at the moment. A few months ago I lost 4, which were replaced. I am convinced since the other 8 survived, and this was so long ago it was not NTD. However now I am having the same syptoms on a few of the fish (fading red stripe and a bit of tail rot), in addition to a new symptom. They seem to have a loss of buoyancy(sp?), a hard time staying away from the surface (which I wonder if it is related to the tail rot and/or bulging), and a bit of bulging around the end of their body, right before the tail fin. None of my other fish have ever, or now, seem to have any problems. The new neons were introduded at least 3 months ago.

Any ideas what this might be? The last fish that showed these symptoms were put in QT and lived for many weeks despite treatment, and eventually died, they never improved or got any worse. They never seem to be suffering (now or then) so I waited it out hoping for the best.

(the fish are in a 180 gallon tank with the same fish they've been with for over a year, ph is 7, nitrite/amonia 0, nitrate about 10. I did just transfer them to this tank a couple of weeks ago, but the fish showed very little stress, I was very careful about the switch).

Sorry this is so long, I appreciate any input.

have you researched on dropsy or popeye?? i lost all 30 of them in a period of 2 month.. all the other tankmates are doing fine, by the way.

It really has no obvious symptoms of either. I'm beginning to think its something weird...Not sure what to do

My neons have fading on their red stripe and a slight bulging before the tail also. Some of them have it, some of them don't. I think it is NTD, and I am beginning to think that not all neons are susceptable to it.... maybe the weaker ones die off, but the really healthy ones can fight it off, at least for awhile.

I had one neon with a faded red stripe that lived that way for more than a year before she died of old age.

Maybe you're right. I would have thought NTD, as I did at first, but I just could not believe that some were still doing well and totally unaffected!! I am beginning to wonder if I still have the original 8 and the new ones just aren't healthy, or the old ones really are immune somehow?!?! I have bought them from 2 different places now too. I really don't think it is my tank, or anything that I am doing wrong. And I really have my heart set on neons!!
