Can anyone tell me how long neon tetra's usually live? I've just found one dead in my tank this morning, I've had another one die about two weeks ago. My tanks PH and amonnia levels seem normal as well as my nitrate and nitrite levels. I got the tank, including livestock from a friend who'd had it for about 18 months to two years so I'm just wondering if its old age thats causing the deaths...

On Monday evening I added more plants (about 25) and did a water change (about 30%), could that have caused it? Any other ideas?

I have neon tetras who are going on 3 years old and one of my black tetras is going on 5 years old, so it may be your water unfortunately. Where did you buy them from? I have had better luck buying from local pet stores vs. "the chains". They seem to just have healthier fish!

Neon tetras are "immortal" after the tank has been set up and running for a while.

Seriously? I've heard they often have some kind of disease because they're all farm raised. Do they really do well in an established tank?

Well, after they've been in the tank awhile, if they've survived, they'll live a long time. I just read in a TFH magazine 'bout one that was 12 years (or somewhere around there)

Supposedly they are very succecptible to disease when they are first introduced to the tank, but after that they are very hardy and long-lived.

i have one that survived 2 schools that all mysteriously died. he's one strong fish. i know he's the same because he has a jagged tail and I've had him since january of this year. I want to get more b/c he's lonely.

Good question! I had wondered that myself....With the exception of one casualty, the rest are going strong...Eat like pigs and do well considering the Platys try to hog all the food...
I;ve read that they live to be 7 years if well kept! I have the same problems as you except my mollies are the ones stealing all the food.
