I have 4 neon Tetas one has had a huge stomach for the last 4-5 weeks. I am not sure what is wrong with it. The tetras no longer school. The other fish do not have this huge stomach. Thanks
Remove the fish from your tank immediately nd put it in a quarantine tank. This could be neon tetra disease. If it is, there is nothing you can do. Is the fish losing its color, or does it have blotches?
It could also be that you are overfeeding and the tetra eats all of the food.
White spots on the scales. They might not be schooling because there are not enough of them. Did they school earlier? You could try adding a larger school to the tank and they might join it.
It may be possible that your fish is pregnant. Or the bloating could be gas buildup, thats what the guy at the fish store told me when I brought in a neon with a bulge on it. Or it might just be that it ate too much, when I had glowlights, one of them got to be 1.5 times the size of the other fish because it happened to eat all of the food, so it might not be something to be worried about. You could try feeding less.
If the color and activity remains good it could very well be that you have one female and four males. It's not uncommon for the females to get plump but breeding may not occur if conditions aren't favorable.
As for the lack of schooling, likely that's because of the few that you have. When young they school more readily. Also similar sized fish, glowlights etc. may tend to intermingle breaking up the tendency to school. What size tank, inhabitants, water conditions etc?
ANother thing I would add is that schooling is a defensive behavior, so possibly your fish do not feel threatened. My neons swam in a tight school for the first 2 days and now they are all over the place, even though they are healthy. It may be the lack of any fish that look threatening to your tetras.
Wow, I also have a neon tetra w/ a buldging stomach, I think that maybe it is cause by over eating though, I just notcied it today.. so I am going to keep an eye on it.
