neon tetra water conditions

I've been told they like soft, slightly acidic water. My glowlight tetras (which are similar to Neons) are in soft water with a pH of around 6.0-6.4 and they are doing well. Temp should be between 72-77 degrees F

Our tap water is very soft so its naturally on the acidic side, although I believe it has what is known as Old Tank Syndrome which makes the water more acidic, not sure, I have to read up on that.
You can use those chemical buffer things to alter pH but its not advisable.

What is the pH of your tank water?

Do not do water modification unless you absolutely must. Soft acid water is needed for breeding blackwater Tetras. It is not needed for maintaining them. Neons, cardinals, glowlights, etc.all do perfectly fine in my moderately hard, alkaline tap water and live to or in excess of six years.
