neon tetras

I completely agree with Faramir. The ph in my tanks are 7.6. It hasn't changed in the 8 years they have been set-up. And my GH/KH is well within the acceptable range. Rather than go through the aggravation of bringing your ph down especially if you change your water weekly, leave it as it is.

I don't have many LFS in my area so alot of my fish were purchased from Pet's Mart very big mistake. Of the dozens of Tetras I have purchased not one survived past a few months. Perhaps you too may need to look elsewhere for your Tetras.

I would have to agree with a few of the other posts as well. I wouldn't tinker with your Ph, this could definately lead to more severe problems.

I am fairly new at the fish keeping game and currently have a 29 Gallon aquarium stocked with 8 neon tetras along with a few other compatible species. My aquarium has been running now for approximately 4 months and all of my neons are fine and healthy, I haven't lost any. The Ph in my aquarium is at least 7.8, maybe even a little higher, so I don't believe that is your problem.

If i had to guess, I would concur with a few other posts that the neons you purchased were maybe diseased from the get go.

Don't give up one the neon tetra species, they are an awesome fish. Try adding some more, I'm sure they will do just fine.

Good Luck!

Hey All,

I won't argue with the comments made disputing my advice because I don't argue with success.

It got me thinking though.... do people here have positve experiences keeping platys mollies and guppies in soft acid water?

In a word, yes!

Platys anyway. I don't think I'd dare try mollies, at least not the brackish species. I'd readily try guppies, as long as I knew the things hadn't been raised in brackish water in the Far East. Guppies (like Platys and Swordtails) are found in all sorts of waters in the wild.

My platys are in pH 6.5, GH c. 4 (varies slightly), KH 4. They don't breed as readily (although they do breed - I have a shoal of bleeding hearts with 'em though so I seldom actually see the fryf or long - miniature pirahnas those things) but they are fine and healthy in themselves.

It's an interesting thing though.
