I had a school of 6 neons and 3 just up and died yesterday. There has been no eratic behavior and their colors have been great (no fading at all, beautiful blue and a deep red). Water for ammonia, nitrates and nitrites is 0 on my test as well as the lfs. Ph 7.4 and water temp is 79 F. The neons are never bugged by any of the other fish (only chasing is among themselves).

Any ideas?

29 gallon bow front
3 neons :(
5 harlequin rasboras
2 blue rams
4 Albino Cories
2 guppies
2 ottos
3 ghost shrimp

they can be somewhat sensitive, have you changed anything in your tank lately? could you have forgot water conditioner on your last water change? Maybe you just got a bad group

The tank has been fully cycled since December and they were the first fish that I added after a fishless cycle, so all 6 have been in the tank since before christmas. I added 2 new cories and a plant in the last week, but the cories seem fine and I already had a plant like the one I added for a month.

I changed the water 2 weeks ago and I am positive that I did not forget the water conditioner.

The other three are swimming around fine and their color is great. From what I have heard of NTD their color starts to fade slowly but mine are a deep red and brilliant blue.

They dont seem to be a very hearthy fish ,I had a few die on me last week and everyone else in the tank is fine and like you mentioned mine as well didnt seem sick or the color fading or anything . So from 8 I have 2 left :sad So theres problably nothing wrong with your tank if everything checks out ok.

I had heard that they could be kind of wimpy fish. It's a shame because they add great color to the tank.

Does anyone know if Cardinals are as delicate?

neons are anti hardy. a water change can kill them. but at their cost you can add more over time if you chose.

it sucks though to be adding fish at a dollar a fish when they drop like flies for so many people.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I think I will slowly phase out the neons since my lfs does not sell them for a mere dollar appeace. I hope the living do no mind the smaller school.
