Neutralizing Bleach

I need some guidance. I removed two of my plastic plants from my tank in order to clean the black algae off of them. I put them in a bucket of water with some bleach and soaked them over night. The next morning, I rinsed the plants really well and put them into a second clean bucket (no bleach or chemicals have ever been in this one) with tap water and dechlorinater (removes chlorine and chloramines). After soaking all day, I removed the plants and they still smelled a little bleachy. So... I left them out to dry, thinking that the bleach might evaporate. They developed a light white powdery coating in some places. They are currently soaking in another bucket of dechlorinated water.

My questions are these: How will I know when the plants are safe to put back in the tank? What is the white film on the plants?

And yes, I know that I probably used way too much bleach and won't do it again. Lesson learned.

Thanks so much! I feel very relieved. I will rinse and scrub them in hot water.

Yup rinse the plants welll, then soak them in dechlorinator. The bleachy smell is from the dead algae, just use your fingers to scrub it off the plants.

Bumping an old thread because I have the same issue ...

When you soak it in dechlorinator, should you soak it in 100% dechlorinator or water with dechlorinator added?
