new 10 gallon qt tank

For my quarintine I don't have gravel, but have painted the back of the aquarium (on the outside) with spraypaint as a background. I have 2 fake plants in it along with some small clay pots slightly broken to make a cave like structure.

Gravel is never imperitive to setting up a tank, but it will be a lot harder to keep clean. the gravel traps waste and excess food and allows for bacterial growth to break down this waste into nitrates that can be either filtered out or used by plants. no gravel means you have to vaccuum out this waste and use more powerful filtration more to get the byproducts out. also, a gravelless tank kinda looks bare. you need to think about the fish too. zoos dont display in plain white cages for a reason. if you try to replicate a natural environment, your fish will be more comfortable, therefore less stressed. less stress=healthy fish. as for backgrounds... they can actually make your fish more attractive! if they are light colored or have clear bodies and the wall behind the tank is white... good luck seeing them!!! Neon tetras look especially cool with a black background and lightly colored gravel for instance...

Decorations... plants for small fish to hide in (fake are nice if you are new to the hobby, and dont want to take on too much responsibility at first)
caves for nocturnal or shy fish will also lead to low stress fishies!

Hope this helps!
