So I decided to make an invert/other tank outta my empty 12 gallon.

So far the occupants are

1 Atya Shrimp
1 Bamboo Shrimp
5 Amano Shrimp
1 Albino Frog
2 tiny (1mm) platy fry

And I'll probably add a few more amano, and some dwarf orange and cherry shrimp.

What do you think so far?

I would say the albino frog will eat everything in the end and get to huge for the 12 gallon tank. I seen them like softball sized eating fishies :S.

ooo first time see atyla... never knew what it was until I goggled it.. is it this Atya gabonensis?

Has this tank cycled yet? Because bamboo shrimp require established tanks since they filter feed on the micro organisms. You could try infusoria or >o< can't remember! But so far it sounds good!

Yeah, its that atya, aka vampire shrimp. Mine is only about 4 inches right now.

And yeah, the tank has been cycled, started over a year ago. The filter apparatus has sat dry for a week and a half before putting everything in there though.

The idea actually stemmed from having to take the atya and frog outta my 29 gallon (see sig) to medicate the tank for ick/red pest.

Threw them into the empty 12 and thought, why not keep them there?

And I know the frog will get big. But verrrrry slowly. he's tiny now (has been for the 6-8 months I've had him. And when he gets too big, I can donate him to a local petshop.

So what else should I eventually put in there, snail or two? Maybe a newt?

Those vampire shrimp look so cool. Where did you get yours, ive seen any at my lfs

If you plan on getting a newt you will need something he can rest on and get out of the water. If you plan on housing an amphibian an african dwarf frog will do much better since they only reach about 1.5-2 inches and are quite the clown as well. And most of the beneficial bacteria in the filter has most likely dried up and died resulting in a new cycle. Just be careful and moniter your tank for any cycle.

Right, but the tank sat still completely full... And I thought the vast majority of your bacteria were on the surfaces, IE gravel, decorations, tank front or back, etc. So all that should have survived just fine.

The Atya I found at the Fish Nook in Acton, MA.

They have geat stock, I check in every week or two to see what I might find. Most of my stock (Leopard Ctenopoma, African Butterfly, Praecox Rainbow, Kribs) I got from there. That includes my Atya Shrimp, they had two, both about 4 inches, I took the one that was more blue. He was only 10 bucks :)

Actually the majority of the beneficial bacteria is located in the filter. I would keep an eye on the parameters of your tank before adding anything else. There is bacteria on the surfaces but it may not be enough. Also the bacteria on the surfaces could have even died back since there was no ammonia source in the tank for a week and a half.
