I'm new to this hobby. I just got a 12 gallon tank, three danios, and some wisteria. I would like to make it a planted tank (because all the pictures on here are so beautiful!). What do you recommend for plants? Its a Marineland Eclipse with a flourescent light. I'm assuming that matches "low" light conditions. I want things that are fairly easy to grow but don't take over the tank if left unchecked for a couple of weeks.

My water parameters (according to the test strips) are:

Temp: 78 F
PH: 7.8
KH (ppm) 180
GH (ppm) 150
These are the plants I'm looking at. I have heard that any type of hair grass does not do well here (from someone who has tried). I would like "groundcover" type plants as well as mid/background.

Cabomba, Green (Cabomba caroliniana)
Borneo Fern (Trichomanes javanicum)
Dwarf Baby Tears (Hemianthus callitrichoides)
Java Fern (Microsorium pteropus)
Marimo Balls (Cladophora aegagropila)
Pellia (Monosolenium tenerum)
Christmas moss (Vesicularia montagnei)
Would you recommend these or anything else?

I would recommend some anubias petite and needle leaf java fern (vs. the regular) as their proportions are very nice for a small tank.

Borneo fern is not a truly aquatic plant and will rot underwater. First and foremost, figure out exactly how many watts of light you have. If you're sticking with low light conditions, something like dwarf baby tears will not do so well. Most foreground "ground cover" type plants need a lot of light and supplementation to thrive.

In addition to Msjinkzd recommendation, I also recommend crypts. Once you figure out how much light you are working with everyone can give you more fitting plant recommendations.

I believe it is a 13 watt bulb and unfortunatly they dont make upgrades for it.
I would also like to know what plants (if any) can grow under these low light conditions? I have a 12g eclipse myself and have been wanting to put some real plants in there

Sunset hygro for background. java moss - carpet or driftwood attach. petite anubia nana - attach driftwood. wisteria for bushy apperance. Java fern will also be fine to add as background. These plants do well with 1wpg and in combination they will create a beautiful aquarium.

I have this setup with a flourite substrate and the Java Moss and Anubias do well. The cryps tend to grow slowly and get long thin leaves.

Thanks - that helps a lot!
