Hello i have a old 20 gallon tank with a penguin 125 with the bio-wheel its pretty well established for about 2 years. Now i'm gettin a 46 gallon bow front in another week if i put my penguin 125 filter on it let it run for awhile. Would i still need to cycle my new tank?

you may still need to cycle, but hopefully with the addition of the used filter and a couple handfuls of gravel from the old tank, it should be a much faster process with smaller spikes. if you don't want the old gravel mixing with the new, you can hang it in a mesh bag or pantyhose. just use your test kits daily and be ready to do water changes when the ammonia and nitrites get over .25.

Yes, you still need to cycle. The filter will help you "kick-start" the cycle. The good bacteria still must colonize the tank walls, the gravel, ect.

Make sure you treat water before moving filter over or will kill all good bacteria.

if you are using the biospira correctly, you don't even need to add the gravel or the filter. it IS the bacteria that you need. add it at the same time you put the fish in and keep it in the fridge until then, otherwise it will be useless. if there is any cycle at all, it will be minimal and only last up to a week. just in case it doesn't work, then use the other filter to get the cycle going.

Well I'm gonna buy a rena filstar xp2 filter too, so I'm just gonna add the old filter and the bio-spira too help get the new filter goin also. I mean you cant be too careful right?
