I have a few questions. I just got a 50 gallon tank and I am ready to get it going. I have waited so long for this. I have read on cycling that it takes a long time to do fishless cycling. But I don't want to buy fish for them to die just so i can add bacteria. Would catching minnows from the river be okay for the tank? Also I have seen a lot of people with snails on here. Are the ones from the river okay? :help:

Thanks!!!

Just go for fishless cycling. I do not think cycling with fish takes any shorter time in general - I did a fishy cycle and it took almost 3 months for the tank to cycle, which is longer than most fishless cycles take.

Plus if you do fishless cycling you just have to remember to add the ammonia and test the water to see what stage the cycle is at. If you are cycling with fish, you end up having to do daily (or more often) water changes so that the ammonia and nitrite don't kill the fish -- so it is a lot more work.

I don't know about adding minnows from the river - is that what you want to stock your tank with when it's all done cycling? If not, what will you do with them when your tank is done cycling? You cannot just put them back into the river - it is illegal. And if they just die in the tank while it's cycling, you'll have to get some new ones in there immediately -- if it takes you a couple days to go catch a few more, forget it, all the bacteria is dead (as there has been no ammonia in the tank to feed it) and you are starting all over again.

jm's got it right though - by far the easiest way to go is to get some used filter media from an established tank and seed your filter with that. That will give you almost an instant cycle. But, if you don't have that option, I know it's tough to be patient but I would definitely recommend a fishless cycle, which could take anywhere from 3 weeks to a couple of months.

I have a ten gallon tank set up. I took some gravel from there and put it in a stocking and put it right where the water comes out of the filter in the new tank. I took some plants from the ten gallon and moved them to the 50g. The filters are a lot bigger and will not fit in the 10g or I would have done that too.

Adding media from the established tank is the right thing to do to jump start the cycle. Is it possible to use some actual filter media from the ten? That will really help you out with your cycle.

Emily:

I did a cycle with fish on a 110G tank several years ago.

The fish (as best as I remember) were 7 gold nuggets, 7 sterbai corys and 12 fancy guppies all of which were juvies.

I never observed an ammonia or nitrite concentration during the cycle and I believe the reason was conservative feeding.

Subsequent to twenty-eight days I added other fish very slowly.

Thanks for all the help! I bought a few feeder fish and put them in there. I went to buy and amnonia kit yesterday and all they had were the strips and from what I have been reading, those things are NO GOOD! So, I will have to wait until Wed to go to a bigger city to get a kit.
