New 55 gallon setup

I would say if you are growing algae with the lights on for 10 hours, then reduce to 8 and see if that helps.

Just to touch on the cycling discussion from earlier.. If you move all of the filter media from the tank your fish are currently in into the new filter for the 55g, boom, the tank is cycled. Cycling a tank has nothing to do with the actual water in the tank (since essentially no BB lives in the water column) and everything to do with establishing a BB colony in your filter.

it's not exactly that easy. the colony still has to grow to a sufficient size to handle the load. the surfaces of the first tank that bacteria reside on are not transferred with the media so the colonies have to re-populate still.

to me, "cycled" refers to a state at which the colony is large and healthy enough to handle 100% of the nitryfying necessary in the tank. hence why ammo and trite readings should always be 0 in a cycled tank. when they rise we call it a mini-cycle and it signifies that for some reason, that bacteria was insufficient at handling the load at least for a short period.
