New 55

I do have alot of single fish wanted to stock with more of the same kinds of each but just started off with a few. So I am to do a water change and use tap water to fill it back up. I can turn my bubblers back on and leave the ph alone and hopefully it will start to cycle soon. Is this correct

oh and I do have the API liquid test kit!! I aloso just picked up three more plants hopefully this will help. Thanks all

Yes. As your fish produce waste (ammonia for all intensive purposes) the bacteria will start to grow in relation to that amount. Introducing plants can help "seed" a tank if they contain the beneficial bacteria and they will also use nitrogenous waste as fertilizer. Just keep testing and doing water changes whenever ammonia and/or nitrite are readable.

So it's been a day or two and it seems my tank is finally stating to cycle the nitrate, and the ammonia level where elevated a little bit for the first time so am i correct in that i should do a partial water change, and if so how much should i change. Also my blue and pink "walmart fish" seem to have two white spots on each of there tails. I'm assuming this is ick and am not sure why all of a sudden it has shown up and on the two fish i have had the longest and only those two but, hay fish tanks are a mystery. But does any one have a recommondation on how to treat?

Two more quick things I would like to add a hammers cobalt blue lobster and a red cherry shrimp when my tank is ok to add live creatures again, would these be a ok fit with what i have in there now? Lastley I have black rocks as my substrate now and I am entertaining the idea of changing it to Tropical Isle Tahitian Moon sand. Would this be a good idea or no. Oh and all these things are sold by drs. foster and smith if you need more info that i have not included. Thank You in advance.

i think i would concentrate more on acquiring more of the same fish that you have, so as to create groups of fish that like to be in groups, instead of adding more singles of various species.

How many is a good size group. Like my tetras and guppies would four or five of each be a good number in a 55, or would more be needed. Also am I correct that even though some of my tetras and guppies are all different colors they all swim together so that is considered a school even though they look different they are the same type so that counts? and I just read that the half round marble type decorative rocks are bad for tanks because bottom feeders can't get to the debris and remove it is this correct, because that is what I have. Would changing to a 1 in sand bottom be better. I like the look of the black sand and I think it would really brighten up my fish. Thanks again

Tetras and other mid/top dwelling schooling fish like groups of at least 6 of their own kind. Guppies do well with one male per every 2-4 females, or if you do not want fry you can go with all of the same sex.
