New 55g setup

Alot of people keep Africans from Lake Tanganyika successfully with plants. I'm not sure of the exact fish though, as I'm a Malawi person. I'm also not sure how aggressive most Tangs are.

I'd steer clear of Malawian Mbuna though (which is mostly what you see in "mixed african" tanks at the LFS). Mbuna will devour most plants and are aggressive. Peacocks may be ok to keep, but they are still a little aggressive and I wouldn't keep alot of them together, as they are the same genus (Aulonocara) and may interbreed. I'm not sure about Malawian Haps.

Definitely read up on Africans from Lake Tang.

glossostigma needs at least 3.5 watts of light per gallon..
And would appreciate CO2 injection. ;)

I just use declorinated tap water. It happens to be a little soft and alkaline. So, I don't bother to check it any further--except for filtration and aeration of course. All my tanks have plenty of artificial plants. Those in another dept. at wal-mart sell for a buck or two and work well--for the fish. Don't get the cloth ones. Just get the plastic. They have two types of long plants in the shape of a garland for only 3 bucks. And, they can be stretched to nine feet. Little caves like small flower pots, etc. help the fish to feel safe. Therefore, less stress. Pretend you are a fish. Humans are territorial too. I like slate and the fish do too. Yet I always worry about them falling against the glass. How did you get the lava rock so thin and tall at the back? Chinese loaches, etc. would find all the crevices a paradise.

Just leave your pH where it is at. Thought the driftwood will help, it's affects are pretty minimal over the long run. Peat works much better, IME.
