I just introduced a new albino oscar to my 125 gallon tank. It is completely cycled and I only have two bichirs as tank mates. After purchase I kept the fish in the bag to get acclimated to my water temp. I took all the precautions to ensure it would be as smooth of a transition as possible but my fish seems to be super stressed. I've tested the water several times and all checks out ok. My new fish is laying on it's side at the top of the water on the side of the tank. He's still alive but I'm worried. Is this normal? Is there anything I can do to make the fish less stressed, etc.?

Did the water you got your fish from have any yellow in it?
I've witnessed fish grow accustomed to water conditions with high ammonia that freak out when you put them in a tank with clean water. The fish that exhibited this condition did not do well until a small amount of the ammoniated water was introduced to allow them further acclamitization. It seems to be similar to withdrawles involving a dependancy.

Oscars are moody, but that sounds extreme.

What did you test with and what were the readings ? (sorry for asking but better to clear that up now).

Floating the bag to equalise temp might not have been gentle enough if your water differs radically from the shop as regards Ph. How is he now ?

Oscars usually get moody on a location change and will go to the bottom and pout for several days. Sounds as if your water is off from what it is used to.

Oh and as regards destressing him, leave the tank lights off, even cover the tank up, after you've made sure of your water at 0 ammonia & nitrites, nitrates below 40 with a good liquid test kit.
