So after discovering it was a pH crash that stalled my cycle, I used baking soda to up the pH to around 7.2 and the cycle completed in 3 days. So Saturday I went out and picked up 5 small angelfish (3 regular, 2 veil tail). I have never owned Angels before, but in 2 days can already see why people love them so much. I pretty much left them alone all Saturday and most of Sunday, and they stayed in the back corner (I kind of expected this) but yesterday afternoon would come out, I opened the tank lid to check on some things and 2 of them swam over, so I put in some flakes and bloodworms........ wow, feeding frenzy!! all 5 of them zoomed out and cleaned up everything.

I have a couple questions though, when some of them are on the left side of the tank they appear to be laying on their side. When they go back to the other side they are fine, is this the flow from my Penguin filter knocking them about? I have a Whisper 60 on the other end and turned the flow down, but cannot do this on the Penguin. They are all eating and swimming fine, just when beneath the Penguin appear to struggle. Should I turn the Penguin off? (Its only on there to use on a QT tank should I need it). If the flow is bothering them that much, I would prefer to just use the Whisper 60 until I can get a cannister filter.

Also, I included a couple pics of my tank. There are some large slate pieces and driftwood in there, but having never owned angels I am looking for suggestions on what else I could add to the tank to make them happier. They already appear curious and swim around most levels of the tank and both ends (especially as I have temporarily turned off the Penguin filter). Some of their fins look a little tattered, but I am guessing this is from the LFS and should clear up with some good clean water and lots of space.

I think thats about it, hope you enjoy the pictures. Edit: No idea why the pictures are only going to thumbnails, they should be a thumbnail on the post that will link to a full size picture.

Yeah I can view the pics too. I just recently bought some pearlscale albino angles they are perfect

Cool, glad people can see the pics. I am still not sure on the laying on the sides thing. I just fed them and they all zoomed out (and by the looks of the sand in one corner are certainly pooping a lot!!).

very pretty.

if they are swimming fine on one side of the tank, but being knocked around on the other, then you likely have too much flow so turn down the outlet that is causing this.

I would think that flow should not be an issue. the angels can seek cover in tall structure.
I use taller pieces of driftwood to break up flow.

they will seek this cover if they need it.
with young angels(like you have) you should be feeding small meals several times per day..then clean up the uneaten food.
(give them 10-15 min)

These fish are great, I had read about them having a lot of personality, but its kind of hard to grasp until you experience it. They come to the front of the tank if I am nearby, if I turn on the lights they all zoom out thinking its feeding time. I think 2 of them are trying to set up a territory of his/her own (each taking a piece of driftwood). Watching them hunt around the substrate and pecking around is really interesting. Really looking forward to watching these develop. They appear to have settled in and recognized me very quickly (only been in the tank since Saturday).

What is the growth rate on them given good clean water and a variety of food?

One of them gave me a scare this morning, for about 5 minutes I could not find it, then discovered he/she behind and and under a piece of driftwood.

VERY nice.
