Hi everyone!

I have been looking for a fishtank for a while to house some goldies, about a 50G tank.
I have found in an online classifieds that someone in my area is selling a 70G at a steal of a price. It comes with an Oscar though.

I have heard a lot about Oscars and was thinking that I could give up my Goldfish dream for now and look into buying this 70G with an Oscar.

I was just wondering if a 70G would be enough for the Oscar to live its whole life in, or if I would have to upgrade. I am really not wanting to purchase a bigger tank, because I really don't have much room in my little place as it is. Right now he is guessed to be about 2 years old and is 7-8 inches long (says the advert.)

I am also wondering some general Oscar caring tips. I am just going to start studying them now to be sure that this Oscar has a full and happy life if I do end up getting him.

I have never kept fish before, but I have done a bunch of studying on them already (as I was planning on getting Goldies), so I do know about cycling and such, but yes, any additional information is greatly appreciated!

Oscars are a great fish with loads of personallity, they are hardy and can live for up to 10 years and will grow to 14-16".
A 70g tank would be ok to keep an oscar in.

Hello and welcome!

I don't know a whole lot about oscars but have heard they make great pets. One oscar will be fine in a 70 gallon but if you want to get more you'll have to upgrade. They need lots of filtration because they are messy fish.

Also, what should I look out for when purchasing a used tank?

I asked the seller about any leaks or anything, but what else should I worry about?

Anything that looks like it shouldn't be there, when in doubt dont get it.

Just some honest advice: buy the tank if it's what you're looking for, but you may want to rehome the Oscar. Being new to the hobby, I think you'd be happier with a large community tank rather than having one extremely messy fish. I read that you want Goldfish, which would be about the same mess, so maybe the Oscar is up your alley.

i wouldn't think you have to worry too much about leaks when the tank has a fish living in it. now, if you go to pick it up and the thing's half full and wrapped with duct tape around the top half, then there might be a problem.

just remember, too, that there are ways to reseal a leaky tank (minus cracked glass). im sure you could find step by step directions. i would take the deal after i saw a photo of the tank
