I had good luck with www.azgardens.com.

Shipping is a fixed cost, you're probably looking at the "handling" fee, which many companies charge if you get an order less than some fixed amount, usually in the $100 range. I hate these add-on fees (I never pay a cover charge to go into a bar, either), but in this case, it makes sense. The person packing your order has hundreds of plants to choose from, and you want him/her to do a good job,and that costs money. Now, if you were picking these out, then that would be a different story... But, it does add to the cost. There's a company that I'll be trying out in Maryland called fishvet.com (I think) where I'll be going to pick up my plants (to save on the postage) that has very good prices. I'll let you know how it goes...

I have 9 well to heavily planted tanks. I can offer the following advice/experiences:

1- Would go plastic before ordering again from AZ Gardens. They never got one single order correct for me.

2- AquaBotanic is a decent place to shop.

3- Several sellers on Aquabid can be trusted.

4. Best source I have found for anubias is http://www.rehobothaquatics.com/index2.html

5- Most new plants should be given a 2 minute dip in a solution of 19 parts water and 1 part bleach- this will kill most if not all of the nasty hithchikers.

6- A great source of info for new to plant folks is http://www.brainyday.com/jared/aquarium/info.htm

7. Two great sites for reserching plants are http://www.tropica.dk/database.htm and http://www.aquaplant.org/default.pl

Hope this has helped some.

I secind some of TwoTankAmin's comments.

1. Definitely try Aquabid - some of the sellers there have shops, others are just hobbyists. You can get some pretty good deals - just check out some folks feedback.

2. I agree on http://www.rehobothaquatics.com/index2.html for Anubias (as well as a few others). More species of Anubias than I knew existed. I just ordered some stuff from him - should be here by the weekend - I will see if it is good as advertised (he does get high marks on Aquabid) - and his plants are much bigger than others by comparison (for instance - some folks on ebay selling 3 to 4 leaf Anubias Nana for around $6 each. Rehoboth's are 8 to 12 leaf plants for the same price).

3. From my research (I haven't used them myself yet), Aquabotanic.com also gets high reviews - while the majority of commencts I read about AZgardens were negative.
