Hey all Im thinking about getting a canister type filter. I know nothing about these. Im looking at either a eheim ecco or a fluval 304. Do these come with all the hoses? And how to you attach the hoses? do you need holes in the tank? Any info would be great. Tim

What size tank are you thinking about getting this for?

both choices you stated above come with the nessecary hoses and don't need to have holes drilled in the tank. I will tell you a little about the Fluval because that is what I have experience with.

There are 2 hoses that you hook up, an intake and an outtake. Both of them connect to a strong plastic nozzle that clips into the filter (which you can either put in the stand under or behind the tank). The Hoses go up and around the lip of the aquarium with a strainer for the intake and a nozzle for the outtake. (you need to cut the hoses to fit your aquarium, instructions come with the manual. I found that the pipe for the intake was EXTREMELY hard to cut... I had to use my table saw to get through it quickly (They reccomend a sharp knife).

If you have any more questions feel free to ask.

I have a fluval 204 on my 30 gallon (non-planted). The 204 is designed for 40 gallon tanks... but hey I like my tanks well filtered. Your 45 gallon tank is right in the middle between 204 and 304, but I think you should go with the 304 (unless you already have a good HOB filter).

From the second I got the filter started I have never had a leak. It is a good filter.

you can get it cheap at www.bigalsonline.com , they are much less inexpensive than most local fish stores.

Yea I buy all my big items from bigals. My lfs have little or no selection and way over priced. I do a have hob but I want more filtration. I think I will go with the fluval 304. Thanks for your help. Tim

Filtar XP-1

...that's what I'd get... :)

i have two fluval 404s on my 125 and love them. never a leak. the easiest way to cut down the length on the intake tube is with a hacksaw. they run super quiet and never had any problems. i pt marineland bio wheel pro 60s on the return of mine for more bio filtration, but thats just personal preferance. good luck.
