New Freebie 10g :)

still have to decide between sand or gravel too :) I was looking to set it up today so any feedback is appreciated on stock or decor.

EDIT: of course I'm going to cycle it before adding fish though, just to clear that up. lol.

I was just thinking that it may be pushing it to add a topdweller along w/ the checkerboard. So do you think that I should just do a pair of them and call it a day w/ the rainbows? Also still needing opinions on the sand vs. gravel debate, I was thinking about possibly going with a plant substrate for a happy medium, lol.

Apistos need at least a 20G with a small school of fish. I think a pair should be fine, but watch out for them since they are in a small spaceee.

Your Cichlids might prefer sand over gravel.

I think that this will be the final stock list:

2 x checkerboard cichlids
6 x p. furcata or threadfin rainbows
shrimp or snails

Does that sound good? I went 2 petco today and got some gravel, and I have playsand so I'll do a mix of both. I was planning on setting it up tonight but i'm still checking for leaks so it will be later.

Going to petsmart today to get a heater and maybe some plants (or anything else I may need). I'm going to try to get this cycled quickly (filter media exchange, gravel in a mesh bag, etc) so I can get fish since I think we're going to my favorite LFS tomorrow. I want to see what they have there in the way of inverts, rainbows, cichlids, and even catfish. I'm worried about the checkerboards because I don't know if my water will be soft enough for them. Are there any other cichlids I could do instead? Or should I just do catfish and have no centerpiece?

Also, sometimes my LFS gets in dwarf puffers. How many could I put in a 10g if I was to totally change the stock plan around? lol I'm not sure but I'd like to have it as a back-up. (I can ask some of the more knowledgeable employees there if there's anything else that I really like that they have and I can't think of, lol)

EDIT: Oh yeah, and the tank is set up now so I'll post some pics later :)
