sooo i have a question... If i want to change out the gravel in my 55 gallon to something more natural, thats not neon blue and hot pink with purple shinny things that came with it... how much would I need and of what? I do not have live plants however it could be a possibility by the end of the summer...

you have many options. you can use sand (white or black), gravel, tiny tiny rocks. crushed stones. ideally, you should have 2 -3 inches of substrate on the bottom of your tank especially if you plan to anchor plants in the future. :]

When I changed my 50 to sand, it took 20 pounds, I later added another 5, and now it is almost 2" average. So, I would guess that for a 2" sand bed in a 55 (same footprint, just taller) you would need about 25-30 pounds of whatever substrate. That will vary with the density of the substrate. The smaller pieces will need more weight for the same coverage. Does that make sense?

once you decide that... we can give you advice on the correct amount

dirt (I have seen it done)
