Well I've done it, bought a little nano tank to start a nano reef :) Very exciting lol.

Just some questions I was pondering

1) A good reef putty, that can be removed easily (if possible) tend to change the tank layout alot until its finally right, but then change it again when I get more coral. We all know what thats like lol.

2) Is a protein skimmer required?

3) Should I worry about the filter having bad reviews as I'll have plenty LR in there to filter?

Thanks in advance. Michael

1). I use Aqua Stick epoxy that you find at Home Depot. It is safe and rated for aquarium and aquaculture applications. It can be removed, but how easily depends on how well you applied it. The more effectively applied, the more difficult to remove.

2). How big is your nano? No, they aren't required, but make things easier, especially if the tank is larger. Otherwise a nice 25-30% weekly water change is more than enough to keep the tank going nicely.

3). Which filter? Just keep an eye out and make sure it isn't any sort of catastrophic failure, like shorting out, flooding, burning, etc. If anything like that is associated, I would ditch it without question.

Cheers for info again :)

Ill try find some of that from a UK supplier. Is it coloured atall?

Its around 50litres be less when the rock etc are in. Got alot of rock in main tank at mo that could do with getting some out so will use that and prob some new stuff too.

And the filter is the built in in the back of the rena tank. Just had some bad reviews about clogging and not really flowing through each section rather flowing straight through. Nothing catastrophic.

My bad. I didn't even pay attention to the fact that you were in the UK. My suggestion is to find some D-D AquaScape epoxy (the folks that make Deltec), since it should be more accessible to you and cheaper. It is better than the cheap Aqua STick epoxy that I use. I simply chose that, since it costs me ~3 USD per tube to buy.

At that size, you can actually choose whatever option you want. It is large enough that a skimmer is still practical, yet small enough that a good water change schedule will fulfill its needs. I think both would be better, personally. As for the filter, I guess compensate as best you can and try to concentrate most of the rock in the main section.

ander, my aqua c remora (maxijet 1200) is a great little Hang on back skimmer. I would look for one on reefcentral, you could probably get one for under 100. Others that get good reviews are the Tunze 9002 and CPR backpak skimmers.

I believe an AquaC Remora and CPR Backpack may be a little big (actually, very big) on a 13G tank. Just the size of them alone would make me not want to use one on that small of a tank, plus I am not even sure if a Remora would fit on a tank that small (depends how tall the tank is). I think those 2 skimmers are great for tanks 20-40G in size. I agree with Amphiprion, the Tunze and Deltec are the 2 best for tanks your size.
