I inherited about 15 Koi and I just built a pond. Its about 11' x 15', 5' in the deepest and 3' in the shallowest. I have a skimmer like box with a internal pump inside leading to a waterfall. My question is, living in Michigan, do I keep my pump running all winter long. Or do I shut things down, drain them, etc. & if so what keeps the pond oxygenated. Thanks for your help, this is my first pond!

It sould be good for the winter as long as the weayher stays good. just make sure your heater is large enough for the pond and the water fall sould be turned off during the winter to keep the temp. from falling to fast.

Hi tieboutbro: I wont to say if you live in michigan.
It would be a good ideal to shut things down.
You are going to need some kind of a bubbler to keep a hole in the ice.
Place it about Five inches or so below the water and it will keep the ice open.
You can also do the same thing with a small pump.
The time is now to cut all plant back a place in the bottem of the pond.
If you put a net over the pond it will make spring clean a bit easer.
I hope this has done some help.
Your fellow ponder Dorsalfin....
