OK, after years of having elaborate freshwater aquarium setups including anything from goldfish to cichlids, I have FINALLY decided to make the jump into saltwater.
I have a 55 gal. Aquarium that is just that, the aquarium alone. I have a good idea of what to do as far as lighting, water type, substrate, habitat fixtures, etc. My only really big question is the filtration system. The tank currently has a walmart special H.O.T. filter, but I don't believe that will be adequate enough to support the type of tank habitat that I have in mind. It was fine for the freshwater, but freshwater tanks are simpler.
I would rather not spend hundreds of dollars on a top-of-the-line filtration system when I know there are people out there who have had alot of success with home-made systems. I just want to know if anybody has any diagrams/plans/ideas/etc. on the construction of a decent filtration system.

One kind of filtration you need depends a lot on what you want in the tank.
If your thinking about coral's you want a protein skimmer not a standard filter setup.

I don't really filter, just use live rock, a protein skimmer and a lot of circulation.

The new Deltec HOB skimmer is getting good reviews. The AquaC Remora would also work well for your tank.
