Bought a sponge filter sold on ebay, which was shipped from China. It was cheap and just wanted to try it with my bubbler. However, I noticed that the product has a strange smell - kind of plastic-like but not quite. Has anyone used these filters? Is the odor safe for fish? How will I make it go before I put it in the tank? Thanks.

Yeah, you will get that on some items made a bit cheaper than others. I forget which gas is coming off of it, but it fades over time. I want to say it's no concern to the fish though. At least i don't think so. I just bought a couple heaters with that plasticky/rubbery odor.

yes I have a few of those. I never noticed a smell other than new plastic. No problems here.

I know the smell you are referring to. It's nothing to worry about. Just rinse it with water well before you put it in your tank and it will be fine.

Thanks for advice all. I have let it air out in my garage. Hopefully, the hot air will take the smell out. It seems to be a bit better now after a day. Or is it my imagination??!! Will wash well before I put in the tank..
