Well, in the end, I decided to put my money down in a beautiful 90 gallon aqaurium. And in it, I will have:
1 Red Oscar
1 Jack Dempsey
2 Pictus Catfish
1 Sailfin Pleco
I want to give my Oscar and JD plenty of room and so I gave the Green Terror back to the pet store. I had to choose between the Jack Dempsey and the Green Terror, and, personally, I like Jacks a lot better. My Green Terror was starting to annoy me with its unwillingness to eat the food I gave it, anyway.
Does anybody know how I can set my tank up to look like a proper habitat for my Oscar? I saw a few pictures of Oscar tanks with wood and plants and rocks that I liked. Some were actually so good that I thought they were underwater pictures of Oscars in the Amazon or something.
I hope the 90 will be big enough for my Oscar and JD to grow to their potential and be comfy in. I'm making my Oscar and JD my centrepiece fishes, with the catfish just being there to keep things clean. Although, I must say that I love the way Pictus Catfish look.
Speaking of big, though, I'm getting worried about the growth of my fish. Given that Oscars can get to 13 or 14" long and 5 or 6" tall and JD's can get as big as 9" long and 3 or 4" tall, it seems my fish are quite puny. I've had both the Oscar and JD for about two months now, and both fish are under 4 inches long. My Oscar, God bless him, tries to act big by swimming around the tank in a majestic way, but he's still being pushed around by the pair of Pictus. And my JD's mouth seem quite tiny and it can barely swallow the larger fish pellets.
Is this normal? Could they, perhaps, both be female and, therefore, smaller?
I know that both of them tend to live 10-20 years so they have plenty of time to grow, but I'm somewhat curious since I saw an Oscar in the pet store that was triple my Oscar's size and, I was told, still under a year old.
The 90 gallon will be big enough, correct?
