i have a 10 gallon tank thats about 4 weeks into the cycling i got a ph test which is reading about 7.0 (good/bad). i also have a ammonia test and its reading 0 ppm(good/bad). the waters a little cloudy and i change 20 %of water every week. it also is getting brown dime size spots on the back do i need to scrub it out? thanks all!!:) oh yeah i have two calico fantails that have been in there since day one they look freat one has a red gill is that ok?

How about nitrites and nitrates? Have you tested those yet?

The brown spots on the tank are most likely algae, and a scraper will take them right off (you can get one at any store that sells pet stuff, they look like a sponge on a stick with a squeegie on the end).

On a side note, your fantails will get really big pretty quick. You might want to prepare yourself to either buy a larger tank or trade them in for something else in a few months....

Your ph is fine, just fine. Let us know how the nitrites/nitrates look, and we'll be able to tell you how far along you are....

As for that brouw sopt, it's algae. You can either craps it off or get a fish like an otto that will eat it.

ok so i got the two tests my water is reading at <0.3mg/l for the nitrite test(had to get tetra test cause they where out of the other on thats pictured above) and my nitrate is reading about 10ppm. i also couldnt find a otto but i got a small algea eater forgot the name but the lfs said he will get about 1 1/2 inches long which is good for my 10 gallon i hope. good/bad? thanks all

The more you feed those goldies, the more problems you will have. Yes, they like variety in their diet (including just about anything that will fit in their mouths... blood worms fit the bill nicely), but you need to be sure to feed them less of each thing if you add something to their diet. I have taken the stance that fish should only be fed every other day (or at least those fish which are common in aquariums), because this is more representative of what they would likely get in the wild. Also, it cuts down on tank maintainence. A fish that eats less "goes" less, if you catch my drift...
