New Tank, New filter?

Whoo hoo! I get my 80 gallon tank tomorrow. Now I have a whisper filter on my 20 gallon right now and also a heater and what I call "the bubble maker" for air. Can I put a 5-15 gallon filter on this new 80 gallon tank or do I have to shell out for a new filter? I would like to use everything I have right now instead of putting a filter in storage for who knows how long.

Most likely, the heater you have in your small aquarium will not be sufficient for a large 80 gallon tank. And your little filter will definitely not be suitable. It's filtering capacity will be a drop in the bucket compared to what is needed for a large tank.

At the very least, print out the page for the Aqua-clear 110 on the petsmart website and go spend $40 using their in-store price match policy and you will have a good start toward having enough filtration for that tank. If you stock your tank any more than lightly, youwill probably want another AC-110 also. . .

But there is no reason you can't also keep that old filter on the 80 gallon tank. Every little bit helps. I actually have a silly little Penguin Biowheel MINI on my 75 gallon (along with an Emperor 400, an Emperor 280, and an Aquaclear 110). It is only on there temporarily to keep its bacterial colony alive while it awaits being placed on a new 10 gallon that I am cleaning up this weekend

I'm guessing you're not wanting to spend alot of money so an AC 110 or a Emperor 400 would be ideal. Personally, I'd get one of each and just ditch the little one. Your total cost would be around $80 for both if you buy online.
If you went with a canister filter, you could get a Rena XP2 for around $80, too. The XP3, however, would be much better and can be had for about $100.

revisiting an older thread... anyway for a fully stocked 75g with moderate to high waste producers would an XP3 and a AC110 be good? I already have the XP3 and im thinking of going with the 110 now.

I have a fluval 404 that I'm gonna use on my 75 gal but I bought it from someone who was moving so I dont know if u wanna spend 150 on ur filter
