Well just got the new 55 running 48 hours ago. My 29 I got used so I dont know if this smell is normal for a brand new tank. When I open the top and smell inside, it smells like chemicals, is it just the glue on the seams and is it normal for a new tank to smell.....well.....new I guess??

It is hard to tell you exactly what the smell is you're smelling. I know my tanks smell... well, fishy! This is normal, however if it really disturbs you or whatever, you can try adding carbon and see what that does for the smells. Just another option you have.

Is this an empty tank? No water, no fish, etc? If so, try rinsing the tank with hot water and oxyclean, then rinse again with cool water. Should remove any odor from shipping/packaging.

I can see it now--instead of "New Car Smell", we'll get "New Tank Smell"!

the tank has water and stress zyme and novaqua in it. The filter has been running for 48 hours and I just put a bubble wand in it last night. I did put decorations in it and its cloudy, seems to be doing the normal cycling thing. I was just concerned of that smell aka "The New Tank Smell".....lol

Thanks guys, I will just keep doing regular sniff tests and hopefully it will go away in a couple days, its not a pleasant smell, it must be from shipping and I thought maybe the glue in the seams.

Thanks all, if anyone thinks I should be concerned please speak up! ;)

when i built my wet/dry sump, the silicon adhesive smelled to high heaven's for over 2 weeks...yet its safe to start using after 4 days. I doubt that the smell will hurt the fishys, but it is HIGHLY unplesent.

It could be the silicon. It won't hurt the tank and you may find that at the bottom of the tank there is a slightly orange ting, this is the bacteria that will break down the silicon that is in the water, I have heard they are called silicoids.

Oh and please prove me wrong, this is just what I experienced and it only lasqted a week and went away after a water change and was the advice given to me by my LFS
